Yinghong Gao, Viva Biotech

Viva Biotech is Presenting at an Upcoming Biocom CRO Event on Transformative Screening Platforms

In today’s drug discovery when low hanging fruits are harder to find, and scientists are rising to the challenges of working on “undruggable” targets or protein-protein interactions, innovative screening platforms have become increasingly important. Viva Biotech, a technology-driven CRO is heavily investing in the state-of-the-art early stage drug discovery platforms such as Affinity Selection Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and X-Ray Crystallography. Its Chief Technology Officer Dr. Shawn Cheng will be speaking at an upcoming Biocom CRO education session featuring “Transformative Screening Platforms for Today’s Drug Discovery” on June 20th at Biocom (https://www.biocom.org/s/EventDetail?event=June-CRO-Event). Dr. Cheng will be sharing with the audience Viva’s ASMS technology as an enabling platform which is un-labeled, unbiased, and high throughput. Applications for screening against diverse or fragment libraries for early lead generation will be showcased. Additional featured speakers at the event include Dr. Elisa Barile of Takeda who will present on Takeda’s Tool Kit of Biophysical Methods, and Dr. Brett Hall, CEO of Asellus Therapeurics, who will be giving a talk on Humanized 3D Modeling for Oncology Drug Discovery. Case studies using different approaches will be demonstrated.

Dana Buckman, Flow Paradigm

Flow Paradigm specializes in analyzing rare cell types in tumor models using flow cytometry.  Panels have been optimized to give the best resolution of cell types within tumors which can be used in immuno-oncology research.

FloCyte is offering more flow cytometry classes, both in San Diego and at companies around the country.  We have teamed up with BioSurplus to offer our services to teach buyers of used flow cytometers how to use them properly.

Bioform Solutions has been expanding over the past year and is in the process of ISO 17025 certification.  We test the health of probiotics using flow cytometry which helps manufacturers to understand if their processes and packaging are affecting the health of their products.  We have branched out in drink areas, such as Kombuchas and probiotic drinks.

Luis Jimenez, Brandwood Biomedical

Brandwood Biomedical has become increasingly active in supporting the local MedTech and IVD industry through involvement of events and active advocacy. Bhawanjit Brar, Jaan Biotherapeutics

Jaan Biotherapeutics LLC (JBT) is a San Diego based company whose mission is to develop “first in class” therapies that can regenerate damaged heart muscle and treat Ischemic heart disease (IHD), the largest single cause of death in the world and other cardiovascular diseases where cardiac muscle regeneration is required. JBT has designed selective microRNA inhibitors that re-activate an endogenous cardiac muscle regeneration process which has been shut down in the adult heart during evolution and repair damaged heart muscle within the heart. It is in the process of completing the second of two NIH grants, results to date indicate a significant increases in heart function in mice with IHD. At the request of the NIH, JBT presented at the NIH Innovation Conference in New York, last November and also has been requested by the NIH to present at Boston Bio, June 4-7 next month. JBT greatly appreciates federal support and is actively seeking partners and collaborators.

Jörg Lorscheider, Paramit

Paramit Completes 2016 Certification Paramit Contract Manufacturing has received certification for ISO 13485 2016.  Previously Paramit operated under the 2003 version of the standard.  This is significant given the shortage of registrars and the large current demand for certification that is ongoing.  Not everyone is expected to meet the deadline.  The certification covers the Morgan Hill CA facility and the Penang facility is expected to follow shortly. This will insure uninterrupted service to our medical and diagnostic customers here in San Diego.  If you have any questions, please contact Jorg Lorscheider,  [email protected]

Samuel Assmann, California Life Sciences Association (CLSA)
