Fireside Chat with R. Scott Struthers, PhD

R. Scott Struthers, Ph.D., is the Co-Founder of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals and has been the President and Chief Executive Officer since December 2008. Under his leadership, Crinetics grew from a bootstrapped startup into a global pharmaceutical company with more than 650 employees focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of novel therapeutics for endocrine diseases, advancing a pipeline of more than ten disclosed programs and bringing its first medicine to market: PALSONIFY® (paltusotine), the first and only once-daily oral therapy for adults with acromegaly, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in September 2025 and subsequently by the European Medicines Agency. In September 2026, Crinetics was acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals for approximately $10 billion. 

Prior to Crinetics, he was Senior Director and Head of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc., from 1998 to 2008. At Neurocrine, he initiated and led the company’s efforts to discover and develop orally active, nonpeptide GnRH antagonists, including elagolix. Prior to Neurocrine, from 1995 to 1998, he co-founded ScienceMedia Inc. to develop eLearning solutions for the life sciences and higher education markets and led contract research efforts at Biosym Technologies, from 1992 to 1995, to develop and apply computational tools for drug discovery. In 2011, Dr. Struthers co-founded the San Diego Entrepreneurs Exchange, a nonprofit organization which he has served on the board of directors of from 2011-2025. 

In 2021, Dr. Struthers co-founded and has served as chairman of Radionetics Oncology, a pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of novel radiotherapeutics for oncology indications based on technologies developed at Crinetics. In March 2026, he was elected to the board of directors of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). He holds a Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of California, San Diego based on the work he performed at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
