SDEE Sustainability is excited to be joined by Bridget Murphy of the Washington State Investment Board to learn about the importance of investing at the state, local, and individual levels to combat climate change.
Bridget Murphy has worked in the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) industry for 15+ years. She started her career with proxy advisory firm Glass Lewis based out of San Francisco before transferring to their Australian headquarters and eventually co-leading research, engagement, sales/client services, and all staff in that market.
She has been the head of asset stewardship/corporate governance at the Washington State Investment Board (WSIB), the public employee pension for the state of WA, since 2017. The WSIB manages approximately US$145 billion in assets and its overriding fiduciary responsibility is grounded by a mission of maximizing investment return at a prudent level of risk for the exclusive benefit of fund participants and beneficiaries.
Socially responsible investing has made its way to the top of headlines across the nation, including by BlackRock CEO Larry Fink who made it clear in his most recent letter to CEOs that “climate risk is financial risk” and sustainability is the top issue for investors.
